Capital Family Practice is offering free diabetes teaching classes on the 4^th Wednesday of each month from 2 to 4 pm in the afternoon. The classes will be taught by a certified diabetes instructor. These classes are for newly diagnosed diabetic patients, family or caretakers of diabetic patients, and even patients who have had diabetes for awhile but want more education.

The cost cannot be beat so if you want to sign up for a class, call CFP at 512-306-8360 and ask for Mary.

IUD Placement Available at CFP

Intrauterine devices or IUDs are a very effective and highly acceptable form of birth control. Dr. Sadhana Patel, Radhika Nayak, N.P., Lesa Droste, N.P. and Jamie Fleeger, P.A. are well trained in the placement and removal of IUDs and will be happy to discuss this type of birth control with you and schedule an appointment to place the IUD.

At CFP , we use two types of IUDs: Mirena (http://www.mirena-us.com/index.jsp) which lasts 5 years and Paragard (http://www.paragard.com/) which lasts up to 10 years. Fertility resumes back to normal once the IUD is removed.
You must have had a recent, normal Pap smear and there are some other criteria you can discuss with your healthcare provider to see if you are a candidate.

Two New Providers Join CFP

Lesa Droste ANP and Radhika Nayak ANP have both recently joined CFP. We are proud to have them as part of our team and we think you will find them as much a pleasure to work with as we do. They both have experience as hospital nurses gained prior to their Masters level degrees which adds a very valuable perspective to their clinical approach. Both are also mothers of young children, adding an invaluable “in the trench” view to our young patients and parents.

Dr. Michael Lifshen is a Super Doc

We are please and honored to announce that Dr. Michael Lifshen has been selected by his peers as a Super Doctor in the November issue of Texas Monthly. Each year Key Professional Media sends out ballots to doctors throughout Texas to nominate colleagues they know to be exceptional in their field. A blue ribbon panel reviews and evaluates the list of nominees from their specialty. In making the final selection, point totals form ballot surveys, candidate research and the blue ribbon panel review are combined for a final score and the doctors in Texas with the highest scores are listed in the Texas Super Doctors edition of Texas Monthly. Allergy Testing Now Available Onsite

We are pleased to announce that we are now able to offer onsite allergy testing. The testing will be performed by CFP providers as well as the medical assistant staff. The testing will be done for the most common Central Texas allergens using the skin testing method. Your provider can work with you to develop an individuatlized treatment plan depending on your symptoms and diagnoses. If you are a candidate for immunotherpy (aka allergy shots) or have complicated allergy or asthma issues we work closely with the Allergists at Greater Austin Allergy and Asthma. ( http://www.austinallergist.com/) If you should choose to pursue allergy shots, you will be referred to one of the allergists we work closley with to formulate a custom allergy serum and begin the treatment protocol through their office. Please call to schedule an appointment at 306-8360 with your provider if you would like to discuss allergy testing or treatment.

Details about skin testing

There are a variety of reasons to consider getting allergy skin testing:

Year round allergies
Seasonal allergies
Asthma especially if triggered by allergies
Recurrent sinus problems
Inadequate response to over the counter allergy medications or prescription medications
Constant post nasal drainage or cough
Constant nasal congestion or runny nose
Eczema in certain circumstances
(Suspected food allergies are typically assessed with blood tests)

Allergy testing is a simple process we perform at our clinic for any appropriate patient 6 years andolder. It involves placing multiple allergens on your back to see how your body responds to them. The device is a plastic cone that gently pushes the test into your skin. It is mildly uncomfortable but does not involve needles and is not painful. You will have the results before you leave and you should make a return appointment with your regular Doctor, Physician Assistant, or Nurse Practitioner to review the results and to make a plan to better control your allergies. Some patients may be candidates for immunotherapy or allergy shots and will be referred to an Allergist to discuss that option.

Please read the attached sheet to make sure you avoid certain medications to maximize the accuracy of your testing. Our office staff will verify your benefits prior to your appointment to inform you of your responsibility. Most insurances cover allergy testing. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask any of our staff.

LIST OF MEDICATIONS TO AVOID PRIOR TO ALLERGY SKIN TESTING

The following medications can affect the accuracy of your skin testing. You should avoid all antihistamines,antihistamine/decongestant combinations, or anything containing an antihistamine for at least one week prior to your appointment for testing. Plain decongestants (Sudafed, etc.), non antihistamine eye drops, non
antihistamine nasal sprays like Flonase, Nasonex,etc. are ok to continue. If you are on a Beta Blocker medication, discuss with your doctor if you can change or stop your medication prior to your testing. If you are on a tricyclic antidepressant, MAO inhibitor, or H2 Blocker, discuss with your doctor stopping or changing your medication prior to your skin testing.

Dr. Hanley is Leaving CFP

After over a decade of service to capital family practice patients, Dr. Hanley has left our clinic as of September 30^th, 2011.

The doctors, staff, and patients at CFP will miss her and wish her the best in the future.

Flu Season Is Coming, So Be Prepared

Flu vaccines are now available for the upcoming flu season.
No appointments are needed for new or established patients. This year’s vaccine covers 3 strains of flu including H1N1. We have the following
vaccines available:

Regular flu shot for most patients is $25
High dose flu shot for folks 65 and older is $35
Flumist nasal spray costs $35
Preservative free shot for pregnant women is $25

Flu vaccines can be obtained Monday through Friday during our normal business hours and Saturday if authorized by our staff in advance. On-site
flu clinics can be arranged for offices, churches, school organizations,
